How Old Are You? A Timeless Reflection on Age and Living Fully

Many of my well-wishers often ask me “How old are you?”
And I find myself pausing, not because I don’t know the answer,
but because I feel the question misses the essence of who I am.

How can I quantify the depth of my experiences,
the range of my emotions,
and the timeless joy I feel in the smallest of moments?

How can I answer this stupid question?

When I play with a little child,
I am one year old.
When I watch cartoons and laugh heartily,
I’m three.
When I dance to the rhythm of a song,
I feel like sweet sixteen.

Yet, when I sit beside someone who’s hurting,
placing a warm hand on their shoulder,
offering quiet comfort and understanding,
I know I’ve crossed more than six decades in spirit and soul.

And when I chat with sparrows or bulbuls,
or chase my dog around the yard,
I become ageless
existing in the moment, beyond numbers and labels.

So what is there in age?
Isn't it just a number a fleeting detail in the grand timeline of life?

Like the light of the sun that never grows old,
Like the river that flows endlessly, adapting yet enduring
I am ageless.
I evolve with time.
I transform with every experience.

The days may be marching towards night,
and yes, one day, it will reach out its hand.
When it does, I will hold it with no fear, no regret.

Until then, it is not my age that matters.
What matters is how fully I have lived.
How deeply I have loved.
How many lives I have touched.
And how honestly I have embraced every shade of being alive.

Final Thoughts

If you're someone who feels society puts too much weight on numbers on age, years, and milestones know this:
You are more than a number.
You are a collection of stories, memories, and magic.

Let’s not ask “How old are you?”
Let’s ask, “How alive do you feel today?”
